Concertgoers were taken back to the beginning of the millenia with a Y2K themed Student Show hosted by University Union. The Schine Underground was decked out with aughts paraphernalia that would make even Paris Hilton stop to say, “That’s hot.”

Before opener DJ Nick Jessop began his set, students were capturing moments in the photo booth, devouring pop rocks, and looting the tables of 2000s-themed goodies.

When Jessop began his set, the mood in the Underground was just right for his eclectic set of beats. The crowd was cheering, dancing, and mingling as Jessop made his way through an eclectic and funky musical lineup. He perfectly matched the Y2K theme and the dimly-lit ambiance of the Underground.

After Hours then established themselves as an energetic and highly talented group of performers after taking the stage soon, opening with “In the Meantime” by Spacehog. Whether it be bassist Darius Baharlo’s funky solo or singer Bella Ierano’s acrobatic vocals, each member of the five-piece band had a moment to shine as they delivered a dynamic and punchy set of covers.

Crowds gathered at the barricade to sing along to the band’s rendition of CeeLo Green’s “Forget You.” As they closed with “Keep Yourself Alive” by Queen, they managed to deliver a fresh and rousing cover of an iconic band. The crowd remained, as they had been from the very top of the set, impressed and connected with After Hours.

Shortly after, veteran SU student band Mimicking Mars took the stage to headline the show. They kicked off their set with their original song “She Likes,” which emphasized the band’s quippy lyrics and captivating stage presence.

The band also performed unreleased songs “$4.75,’’ “Squirrels (in A hurry),” and “Janky Jones & the Blackjack Blues,” whose titles exemplify the playful and witty spirit of Mimicking Mars. As they ripped through their set of originals, Mimicking Mars proved again and again that they know how to rock out like it’s the turn of the century.

Every performance of the night was a showcase of SU’s student body’s undeniable talent, creating a tangible sense of community and pride at the Underground soiree.
